These are the adult dogs and parents of our puppies.  Our original Coton lines have produced some wonderful show prospects and puppies over the years.  Gigi and Lola are products of our original Coton lines at A Breed Apart. 

 

With a focus on health and preserving the  breed standard, (We don't believe you can possibly IMPROVE the amazing Coton de Tulear!) we have chosen these special dogs, not only for their wonderful genes, but for their temperaments and qualities that will exemplify the breed.  Our original lines were carefully chosen from European and Domestic breeders to ensure a wide gene pool for the best health and longevity of our little breed.  

As a very small hobby kennel, we have purposefully chosen not to join any Coton clubs at this time, as our breed's gene pool is already so limited, we wanted to have the option to choose lines from all over the world and not be limited to the members of a club.  There are many wonderful lines being produced by the clubs, we just choose not to join at this time.    We inquired with a couple clubs  and discovered they were  exclusive to only allow breeding of "approved club lines".   As we only raise a small amount of litters, our dogs are our pets first and foremost.  We maintain our own code of ethics and feel we do not need the endorsement of a club to verify what we already do on our own.   Each club has its own standard, and they don't intermix with each other, which is confusing to us as we don't like to be involved in politics of the breed, we just want to do our best to produce healthy and socialized puppies.     

We feel that this practice of limiting the Coton lines will limit our choices in breeding stock, and further limit the rare gene pool of this extraordinary breed.  We want the option to choose from all the lines available world wide, without having to be granted approval from a club.  We don't feel the breed is stable enough to limit the breeding to just a few select lines, and most clubs have a limited amount of memebers,  which will eventually paint us into a corner.   We also have never needed the help in placing our puppies, as we only work through our waiting list, and most families are all referrals from happy puppy owners.

 

 Not just any dog can make a good mother! We raise our potential breeders from puppy hood, watching how they integrate with our other dogs, and interact with puppies. If we see signs of aggression, lack of nurturing instinct, or any negative personality trait--I will not use them in my breeding program. To me, not only beauty and health is important in raising puppies, but temperament and disposition.
